Helpful hints and tips on maintaining a healthy balanced lifestyle
So far this year at Making Sense of Sugar, we’ve taken another look at areas such as sugars and your body, what sugar is and how it’s used, as well as looking at calories and food labelling. When it comes to topics, we always do our research and see what interests our followers on @senseofsugar. Achieving a healthy balanced lifestyle continues to be important to many of us; so this month we wanted to pull all that information together and share some helpful links and tips on this can be achieved.
What’s in your food and drinks?
One way to help understand what’s in your foods and drinks; such as sugars and calories is our Guide to Sugars. In this tool, we’ve taken a closer look at some of the labels of everyday family favourites and shown where you can find information on where the sugars and calories come from in your food, some of which may surprise you. From kids’ favourites to your typical Saturday night dish, why don’t you take a look?
Planning meals ahead can be a great way to ensure you and your family have a balanced diet. One app you may find particularly useful is the Change4Life Smart Recipes app. This app has hundreds of recipes available as well as some top tips for when you are planning your family’s meals – why not give their meal mixer a go for a bit of inspiration.
What does a balanced diet look like?
Another useful tool to look at is the Eatwell Guide which shows how much of what we eat should come from each food group to achieve a healthy, balanced diet. The summary of the Eatwell Guide is particularly useful as it breaks down each food group down and explains why it is important to include each type of food for a balanced diet. A healthy balanced lifestyle isn’t just about diet, it covers a range of different aspects – such as getting active. NHS Choices discuss the important benefits of keeping active and how exercise is a key part of achieving a healthy balanced lifestyle. We understand making time for physical activity can be a challenged and, so try and make your life a little easier, we have a list of fitness apps to suit everyone. Whether you are into indoor fitness or cycling and walking or perhaps want to get active with the whole family, this will give you a great place to start. You can also check out Change4Life’s activity finder for a fun day out for all of the family in your local area; whether that’s swimming or an outdoor adventure – exercise doesn’t have to be boring!
